How to Become a Web Developer

What is a Web Developer?

A web developer is a programmer who creates programs and applications for the web. Web developers know how to build a website from scratch: they have the ability to produce custom code to accommodate the needs of their clients or employers.

What does a Web Developer do?

Web developers set up the back end and front-end of a website, and they create these site with the needs of their clients and consumers in mind. The work of a web developer is typically very project oriented and involves collaborating with a team of people who help put together the client's needs with the end product.

Web developers typically create the layout of a website, creating a visually interesting home page and user-friendly design, and may sometimes write content for the website. After a website is up and running, developers make sure that the site is functional on all web browsers, and they also test and update sites as needed.

Web developers also work in conjunction with Graphic Designers for graphics, layout appeal to visitors and SEO specialists for optimal web visibility.

Types of Web Developers

Front-End Developers - A front-end developer is a web developer that codes the front end of a website. They create the overall design and feel of the website.

Back-End Developers - A back-end developer is someone who builds/maintains the technology needed to power the components which enable the user-facing side of a website to exist. Their back end code creates the foundation for front-end designers to work upon.

Full Stack Developers - Full stack developers understand how every part of the web development process takes place and can guide on strategy and best practices. They’re knowledgeable when it comes to the client’s user experience side and the server side.

JavaScript Developers - JavaScript (JS) is a type of web programming language that is supported across all web browsers and tools, and is the language that gives JavaScript developers control and power to create, enhance and modify websites.

Required Education and/or Certification.

Certification in current Web development systems and software may benefit an applicant, especially one without a bachelor's degree. Such certifications are available through continuing education institutions, software companies or professional associations.
